WARNING

NOT EVERYTHING THAT

CALLS ITSELF ORTHODOX IS

TRULY ORTHODOX

The above warning was given to me when I first met Orthodoxy in 1986. Today [2009] it is even more perilous, even more difficult to find the Royal Path. For one thing there is a far greater abundance of misinformation. And many materials are missing, and other materials are being rapidly rewritten. For another thing there are fewer than ever guides remaining on the Royal Path, especially who speak English. Hopefully this website will be a place where Newcomers to the Faith can keep at least one foot on solid ground, while they are "exploring."

Euphrosynos Cafe

Website Review
updated September 2015

The Euphrosynos Cafe today can be described with one word: pathetic.  It is a dangerous place for a trusting newcomer who is hoping to find some guidance in choosing a jurisdiction.  It attracts the super-correct mentality.

The owner is a former priest in the GOC-K.  He also owns the Orthodox Christian forum, which is a world-orthodox forum.  He is a graduate of the world-orthodox St. Vladimir's Seminary (of the Parisian school Fr. Seraphim warned against).   He does not have enough time to care for the Euphrosynos Cafe – he has given over the administration pretty much entirely over to "Maria".

Maria is a Matthewite.   This is her most recent jurisdiction.  Before that she was in the Milan synod.  Before that she was in the GOC-K.  Before that (she says) she was in no Church for 3 years, after leaving the OCA in 2009.  I met her at the time she had left her GOC-K parish (2013) and was checking out HOCNA and the ROCOR.

Jonathan Gress is a moderator.  He was (maybe still is) in the GOC-K.  He recently was married outside the Church to a Jewish woman.

Commentators (with few exceptions) use pseudonyms, they have the option to list their jurisdiction.  No information is verified, and the commentator is permitted to remain anonymous even to the administrators.  This has proven disastrous.  The most active commentator (after Maria) goes by the name of "Barbara".  Formerly she used Catherine5 and Cheetah88.  She claims to be in the RTOC.   She has deep Muslims sympathies, and even once blurted out that the Muslims are right and the Christians are wrong.  She is also a flatterer, unashamedly.

This is not a group that should be advising unsuspecting newcomers.  No catechumen in the GOC-K or ROCA could get a blessing to read or participate on the Euphrosynos Cafe.  I can only think of one priest who might bless it, (and he is a closet jurisdictional ecumenist).

I am embarrassed that my Sister Church has an association with the Euphrosynos Cafe, and I am hoping that the owner will soon wash his hands of it.

  1. Even Suaiden seems to have left the E-cafe. he hasn't posted anything there in a long time. I guess he's afraid of debating with Maria, or maybe Maria has banned him also. Nathan Lewis is also a member of E-cafe but has never commented there, I guess he would be considered a lurker there as he is considered a lurker here and on my blog.
