WARNING

NOT EVERYTHING THAT

CALLS ITSELF ORTHODOX IS

TRULY ORTHODOX

The above warning was given to me when I first met Orthodoxy in 1986. Today [2009] it is even more perilous, even more difficult to find the Royal Path. For one thing there is a far greater abundance of misinformation. And many materials are missing, and other materials are being rapidly rewritten. For another thing there are fewer than ever guides remaining on the Royal Path, especially who speak English. Hopefully this website will be a place where Newcomers to the Faith can keep at least one foot on solid ground, while they are "exploring."

Lead us not into temptation

These words can be by itself a temptation, because we see an implication in there that God would or could lead us into temptation.  The word "not" stuck in there as it is gives us this impression.  Of course we know that can't be right...  We know that temptations come from hell.

О Lord, Thou hast protected this Thy flock, preserving it unharmed by the temptations of the enemy; for with Thy precious blood Thou didst redeem it from enslavement to the enemy, in that Thou art compassionate and the Lover of mankind.

Octoechos Wednesday evening Vespers Tome 8 on "Lord I have cried..."

I now direct my whole heart and mind, and the inclinations of my whole soul and body, unto Thee, my Creator and Deliverer; and I cry unto Thee, O thrice-radiant sole Dominion: Save me, Thy servant, from all manner of temptations and tribulations.

Octoechos Sunday morning Nocturns Tome 4, Canon to the Trinity Ode IX

Here and countless places elsewhere in the treasury of our Church (services, Scripture, Lives of Saints, traditions, etc.) it confirms what we instinctively know that temptations are from the devil.  Even if God does allow the devil to do it, it is the devil who leads us into temptations.  Instead God delivers, saves, rescues, sets free, ransoms, redeems.  He leads us out of temptation — not into temptation.

I find a similar confusion in the Prayer of St. Ephraim,

O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talking give me not. Prostration

But rather a spirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love bestow upon me Thy servant.  Prostration

Both cases can be made right with this understanding:

lead us not into — "lead us away from" or "turn us aside from"

give me not — "take away from me" or "prevent/protect me from"

What MP (& ROCOR-MP) is doing this lent

Patriarch Kirill decided to pray for the war

Aвтор: Митрополит Агафангел. Дата публикации: 31 марта 2024. Категория: Московская Патриархия.

Since March 29, in all MP churches, clergy have been instructed to offer prayers for victory in the war unleashed by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. For this purpose, a special decree was issued, published by the telegram resource “Orthodoxy and Zombies” https://t.me/orthozombies For failure to comply with the decree, priests can be (and will be) subject to bans. The prayer should also be read by monastics during Lent and by the laity (obviously, after the words of the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian “grant me to see my sins and not condemn my brother”).

.

The MP demonstrates an amazing darkness not only of the mind, but also of human nature itself.

The text of the prayer is as follows:

Prayer for Holy Rus'

Lord God of hosts, God of our salvation, look in mercy on Thy humble servants, hear and have mercy on us: behold, those who want to fight have taken up arms against Holy Rus', eager to divide and destroy her one people.

Arise, O God, to help Your people and grant us victory through Your power.

Hasten to your faithful children, who are zealous for the unity of the Russian Church, strengthen them in the spirit of brotherly love and deliver them from troubles. Forbid those who tear apart Thy robe, which is the Church of the Living God, by darkening their minds and hardening their hearts, and overthrow their plans.

With Your grace, guide those who hold you to all good and enrich them with wisdom!

Strengthen the warriors and all the defenders of our Fatherland in Your commandments, send down strength of spirit to them, preserve them from death, wounds and captivity!

Bring those deprived of shelter and those in exile into their homes, feed the hungry, strengthen and heal the sick and suffering, give good hope and consolation to those in confusion and sadness!

In these days, grant forgiveness of sins and create blissful repose to all who were killed and died from wounds and illnesses!

Fill us with faith, hope and love in You, restore peace and unanimity in all countries of Holy Rus', renew love for each other in Your people, so that with one mouth and one heart we confess to You, the One God glorified in the Trinity. For You are the intercession, and the victory, and the salvation of those who trust in You, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

It’s amazing that the Moscow Patriarchate + Putin’s regime turns out to be Holy Rus'! So, it turns out that the Antichrist, as the “God-given leader,” is very close.

Truly, a prayer from a gang of murderers before the destruction of yet another peaceful village. God is theirs, and all of us, judge!

Long Skirts for Church

and for everyday

NO SLITS

NO LOPSIDED HEM

https://newcreationapparel.com

affordable, elastic waist, pockets

I would appreciate if somebody knows of a source for traditional square scarves sold at a fair price.  Silk is ok — it is slippery, but not as slippery as nylon or polyester...  Cotton or linen would be best.  Also, those extra sheer scarves that used to be so popular in the 70s... I'd like to have an affordable source for those  — I found them online once, but the cost was ridiculous, I only bought one — a white one for Pascha.   (see photos below)  I discovered a nice way to wear scarves, by taking a plastic headband and inserting it into a square scarf folded into a triangle.  This works wonderfully for me, since I don't like knots tied under my chin -- choir members might understand.  Below is a teddy bear modeling my sheer Pascha scarf.  It is so light weight, I can forget I'm wearing it.  You might be able to detect the headband at the fold, but you really have to be looking for it.

This scarf pictured above is 27"x27"and folded on the bias into a triangle.  A white plastic headband is inserted at the fold.  Plain, simple & functional headbands are sold in the craft department, like at JoAnne's Fabrics or Michael's Crafts.  The longer ends of the scarf are held together with a clear elastic rather than tying a knot.

p.s. I'm not interested in sources like Amazon, Mercari, Etsy, Ebay, Poshmark, etc.  I won't use them.  Not after what they all did to Trump in 2020.
