For another thing there are fewer than ever guides remaining on the Royal Path, especially who speak English. Hopefully this website will be a place where Newcomers to the Faith can keep at least one foot on solid ground, while they are "exploring."

What Connects the Nativity with the Two Robbers Crucified with Christ

The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord is among the most beloved and familiar moments of the Church year.  Its images and words are known by heart; its joy returns unfailingly each winter.  And yet, the mystery of Christ’s birth is never exhausted.  Each year, the story of Bethlehem reveals new depths, inviting us to look again and to see more clearly.

Holy Tradition, early Christian writings, iconography, and even ancient legends preserved on the margins of the Gospel narrative help us perceive the Nativity not as an isolated event, but as the beginning of a single saving path — one that leads inexorably to Golgotha and beyond.

The Church has long read the Nativity in the light of Pascha, discerning in its images the promise of the Cross and the Resurrection.  The cave and the manger foreshadow the tomb; the swaddling cloths recall burial linens.  Even the star that guides the Magi has been interpreted by some of the Fathers as a sign that quietly prefigures the Cross. From the very start, Christ enters the world not in triumph, but in humility — and with His saving Passion already in view.

Within this same framework there exists an ancient tradition, preserved not in the canonical Gospels but in early Christian writings such as the so-called childhood gospels and the Gospel of Nicodemus.  This tradition links the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt with the two robbers who would later be crucified alongside Christ.

According to these sources, the robbers were named Dismas and Gestas, and their first encounter with the Lord occurred many years before Golgotha, in the Judean wilderness.  Travel in those days was dangerous; roadside bandits were a constant threat.  One version of the story tells how the Holy Family encountered such a group, and while Gestas prepared to attack, Dismas intervened.  He paid his companion off and allowed the travellers to pass unharmed.  Moved by his compassion, the Most Holy Theotokos promised that the Child would remember him in the hour of his greatest need.

Another version recounts that the Holy Family was briefly held captive by robbers, and that the Mother of God, by Her own milk, nursed the infant son of the band’s leader — a child who would later grow up to become Dismas.  Whatever form the tradition takes, its meaning is clear: mercy is encountered long before repentance is fully understood, and grace quietly prepares the heart even when life takes a dark and crooked path.

The Gospel narrative brings this ancient memory to its fulfilment.  On Golgotha, two robbers are crucified with Christ, one on His right and the other on His left. One joins the mockery of the crowd.  The other — Dismas — turns toward the Crucified Lord with words of repentance and hope: “Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom.”  Christ answers him with the promise that embodies the hope proclaimed by the Gospel: “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Seen in this light, the Nativity already contains the Cross, and the Cross reveals the true meaning of the Nativity.  From the beginning, Christ enters a world divided not between the righteous and the wicked, but between hearts that open themselves to mercy and hearts that refuse it.  Bethlehem and Golgotha together proclaim the same truth: salvation is offered freely, but it is received personally — in humility, repentance, and trust.

Thus, the story of the newborn Child and the story of the repentant thief are not two separate episodes, but one continuous revelation of God’s love: a love that seeks out the lost, waits patiently, and opens Paradise even at the final hour.

" . . . in the Preobrazhensky* Guards Regiment, where he {Elder Theodore] soon received the rank of sergeant.  A certain incident drew his thoughts to eternal life and sharply changed his usual luxurious way of life.  On one occasion in the circle of his comrades and at the high point of their merriment, one of them collapsed on the floor and died on the spot."

Russian Ascetics of Piety was the most extensive work compiled by St Nicodemus, Bishop of Belgorod. This multi-volume set was originally published by the Athonite Monastery of St. Panteleimon between the years 1906 – 1910.  It contains a large collection of the lifes of holy ascetics of the 18th and 19th centuries.  The compiler himself died as a martyr at the hands of the Communists in 1919.

Caution: half the books sold today (2026) by neo-Jordanville are world-Orthodox books.

Old Paths Press, is coming out with some really wonderful books, newly translated from Russian written by our trusted modern Church Fathers, such as St. Theophan the Recluse.  It appears to me we can pretty much trust that the materials have not been censored.  For the most part, the enemy of our Church should not find any cause for censoring these older materials that have nothing to do with the ROCOR-MP union.  However, be aware that the publisher assumes that their MP is the valid continuation of the true Russian Church.  The footnotes indicate which ascetics have been more recently canonized by the MP, after the Lifes were compiled by the Holy New Martyr Bp. Nicodemus.
     
Old Paths Press will disgrace their publications.  An example is their 2 volume hardcover set On True Christianity by Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk.  The Old Paths Press have defiled this wonderful offering by including a foreword written by a world Orthodox flaming ecumenist-heretic, Met. Jonah Paffhausen, who is today in the ROCOR-MP.
     Future generations will pick up this heirloom-quality book and assume that Met. Jonah Paffhausen was a safe author who can be trusted.   So, if you purchase a copy for your home library, or for a gift, be sure to make a note about this on the foreword page inside the book — that the author of the foreward is an ecumenist-heretic under much serious criticism from both valid and invalid Orthodox Christians.
     This practice of associating a saint (Tikhon) with a heretic (Paffhausen) is a mixing of pearls with dirt that I see happening in different places now.   For example:  St. John Maximovitch and St. Seraphim of Platina are grouped with false elders like Porphyrios and Sophrony.  If so many in this generation do not detect this abomination, then how will the next generation detect it?

To Fool the Elect

Bringing Orthodox closer to Protestantism

In the free world Orthodox local churches have fallen under the authority of liberal, modernist ideas that fundamentally abolish true Orthodoxy and bring them closer to Protestantism. Of course, all of this is covered by the most plausible slogans, in the hope of somehow deceiving the vigilance of the zealots of Orthodoxy.

We in the ROCOR (not ROCOR-MP) and GOC are able to discern that ecumenism is truly a "path to perdition."  We recognize ecumenism as the trick of the Antichrist reserved for the last days.  The ultimate heresy.  The heresy of all heresies, because it contains and combines every heresy that came before.  World Orthodoxy has lost this discernment, for the most part.  Many world Orthodox don't particularly like it that their bishops are members of the WCC, they see something is wrong with that; but they do not have an accurate sense of how serious, how deadly is ecumenism.  It is not much more than an annoyance to them.  
 
I always believed this lack of concern was because world Orthodoxy suppresses end times teachings.  World Orthodox are not allowed to ask about Antichrist, who is maybe thousands of years in the future.  Any interest in end times is openly criticized with the intent to shame you into never mentioning it again, especially in public.  "Worry about your own end," was how one now-ROCOR-MP priest rebuked me in 2007.  This priest was like a bird let out of a cage when he was finally allowed to go into communion with the OCA.  This is the exact opposite of the old ROCOR, old Jordanville.  Archbishop Averky used to interrupt his own sermons to teach us about Antichrist.  He stressed that we need to study the Antichrist who is at the door, and to study his spirit; otherwise we will not recognize it as evil.  And we might not recognize Antichrist when he comes in person.

Certainly suppression of end times teachings, (which ROCOR actually started doing with the Laurus synod in 2000), is an important part of Antichrist's agenda.  But, I believe there is a trick even more basic that comes before the ecumenism trick. Antichrist first needs to prevent people from having discernment.   When people don't know right from wrong, then it is easy to get them to accept the wrong.  There is an effective satanic trick that thwarts discernment that most of us are not aware of: "
imaginary forgiveness."   

Imaginary forgiveness is tied up with a perversion of the true teaching on judging.  In this perversion, discerning is forbidden because discerning is the same as "judging."   People in world Orthodoxy willfully blind themselves to the most harmful sins of others and believe they are being virtuous to do that.  This willful voluntary self-blinding causes loss of discernment and/or prevents gaining of discernment.   
(And potentially much worse.  See St. Philaret's sermon on "Blaspheme Against the Holy Spirit.")  Without discernment the door is opened for all kinds of falsities to enter.   Because of lack of discernment, world Orthodoxy is even going so far as to bless homosexual marriages,  because they are afraid of "judging" the homo.  

Since the beginning of this Lent I have made 3 posts about what I call "false forgiveness."  What I have been calling "false forgiveness" Archbishop Averky calls "imaginary forgiveness."   He says it much better than I.
